Day of the Dead Sugar Skull Halloween Makeup
Sugar Skull Makeup for Halloween
Today’s Day of the Dead Halloween Sugar Skull Halloween makeup look is brought to you by 2013. I cannot believe it’s been seven years since I did this makeup. I mean, what were you doing doing seven years ago on Halloween?
St. Louis is actually a big Halloween town. There are several Halloween parties in downtown St. Louis every year. Just like any other Halloween, parties range from scary to fun, from slutty to costumes to expensive engineered costumes. And they have prizes to match. This Halloween party was obviously themed “Day of the Dead” or similar, where this costume was appropriate.
These clients were headed to the Halloween party at the Lemp Mansion, which is notoriously haunted. In turn, that makes their Day of the Dead theme very appropriate. I have only been to the Lemp Mansion for wedding receptions and unfortunately, haven’t witnessed any haunting that I’m aware of. For me, that’s great because I’m not a haunted house kind of girl. You?
Anyway, Day of the Dead was the costume of choice for this Halloween party and they needed Sugar Skull makeup to match. That’s where I came in. I literally went to their loft downtown, went in and did their makeup.
Since I mostly do beauty makeup, Halloween makeup is a little challenge for me every year. I gladly accept the challenge whenever possible. I love the different palettes, the costume accessories and the pushed boundaries of Halloween makeup. It’s almost a totally different skill set than beauty makeup.
When I lived in Las Vegas, I got to turn someone into the Joker from Batman. That was my favorite Halloween makeup ever. Once I find pictures from it, I will be sure to put them up on the blog. I was literally scared of my client once I was finished, so I think I did a great job.
Anyway, let’s get back to the Day of the Dead Sugar Skull Halloween Makeup I did for these clients.
Products Used for Sugar Skull Makeup
When choosing makeup for any makeup application, I try to mostly use what I already have in my kit. As a makeup artist, there’s a fine balance between spending money on makeup and making money doing makeup. The goal is definitely to have the latter be a larger number. It won’t happen if I buy new makeup every time I go to do makeup.
With that said, every Halloween I usually have to buy something new. For this look, I had to purchase the white base, little gems and I opted for Halloween lashes instead of beauty lashes.
I used Ben Nye’s Clown Kit for the white. It is well known for being a great white makeup base because of its staying power and opaqueness. For the black, I used MAC eyeshadow in Carbon and a mixture of MAC pigments. I bought gems from Michael’s, a crafter’s best friend. And the lashes came from Sally Beauty Supply’s Halloween stock. Those were all applied with DUO lash glue.
Although some of this makeup looks amateur, I have to remember that there weren’t a million Sugar Skull YouTube tutorials in 2013 to follow. The Sugar Skull look still wasn’t a go-to look for beauty vloggers, so I had to go off what I knew and what I had on hand. Also, I took these pictures on whatever version iPhone I had in 2013. So please, ignore the terrible quality of these photos.
Overall, I was very pleased with the outcome. What do you think?
